SFTP is a completely different thing to FTP as defined under RFCs 959 and 3659.
SFTP = FTP-over-SSH, which means adding an SSH server role to the project. I've investigated and there are SFTP client modules and some sporadic information about SFTP server modules, but nothing concrete.
However, we may be able to support FTP over SSL/TLS - aka FTPS (FTP secure). I will investigate more.

I'm not familiar with SFTP except that a client isn't able to use our Azure service because our FTP -> Azure blob storage doesn't support SFTP.

Does anyone know the general effort or steps involved to extend the FTP server to support SFTP?

I currently do not plan to implement any SFTP functionality, however, should a member of the wider development community wish to begin working on it please contact me.
